Injectable Treatments: Botulinum Toxin and Fillers

Botulinum toxin (Botox) and hyaluronic acid fillers are 2 different substances that are used in dermatology for aesthetic purposes. Depending on the needs of the face they can be used together or separately.
Every day thousands of cells in our skin are renewed and produce essential substances like hyaluronic acid, collagen and growth factors that are responsible for the normal function of the skin. Extrinsic factors (smoking, pollution, sun exposure, diet and stress) and intrinsic factors (our genes) affect the production of these substances and the renewal of the cells. That’s why every person ages in a different rhythmus. Due to the regular contraction of the muscles in the upper face dynamic wrinkles are created. Additionally the loss of collagen and hyaluronic acid in the lower face are responsible for the creation of the saggy face.
Injectable hyaluronic acid, a substance that exists already in our body, retains water thus giving volume, shining and firmness in he face. It is applied when we have loss of volume in an area like the wrinkles around the mouth, the lips, the cheekbones and the fine wrinkles around the eyes and the forehead.
Botulinumtoxin in the contrary blocks the muscle contraction thus preventing and reducing the dynamic wrinkles created from movement. It is mainly applied in the upper third of the face, the forehead, between the eyebrows and around the eyes. The duration of action is 4 to 6 months.
Since every person ages in a different rhythmous there is no certain age to start such a treatment. The most important before performing any treatment is a proper clinical examination where you can discuss with your dermatologist about your needs and goals in order to create a treatment plan. Furthermore you can discuss any questions you have about the different products.
